FEATURED EVENT:
Tormenta Tropical SF with DJ Dus, Awesome Tapes from Africa
After more than four years of doing Tormenta Tropical every month in San Francisco, two facts have been very clear. First, San Francisco LOVES cumbia. Second, people at Tormenta Tropical will dance to tunes from just about anywhere as long as the rhythms are proper. As it turns out, this month’s lineup caters to both of those realities.
DJ DUS is headlining the festivities this month, coming to the Bay all the way from Corpus Christi, Texas. He’s part of the famed Peligrosa crew, and is responsible for many of the hip-hop-infused cumbia heaters we’ve been dropping on the Tormenta Tropical faithful for the past few years. The man is a master of chopping up cumbia rhythms and pairing them with slapping hip-hop beats, so we’re truly excited to see what sort of damage he can do in person.
The second guest this month comes from even further away. AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICA calls New York home, but his supercool blog has been turning people on to wonderful sounds from the African continent for years now. As he turns out, he’s also capable of putting his curatorial skills to use on the dancefloor, and will literally be DJing with cassettes (!). We’ve had a lot of guests at Tormenta Tropical over the years, but have never had anything quite like this.
Of course, Tormenta Tropical residents Shawn Reynaldo and Oro11 will also be in the house, dropping plenty of tropical jams of their own.
