After last month’s big 4-year anniversary celebration, it seemed like it might be impossible to ever top that lineup, but we haven’t waited very long to try. Plainly said, the first Tormenta Tropical of 2012 is going to be absolutely massive, and you should find a way to be there.

Headlining the festivities is none other than SINDEN. The man may have made a name for himself in London, but he recently relocated to Los Angeles and Tormenta Tropical is going to be one of his first shows as an adopted Californian. For the unfamiliar, Sinden has played an essential role in dance music over the past several years, holding down a now-legendary KISS FM radio show, producing massive club tunes, and championing a wide variety of cutting-edge sounds from around the globe. He also heads up the burgeoning Grizzly label, home to music from artists like SBTRKT, Brenmar, Distal, Jay Weed, and others. And although his sound has drifted toward hip-hop and bass music recently, Sinden still has a profound love for tropical rhythms and will be putting together a special set specifically for the Tormenta Tropical dancefloor.

Our other guests are the men of VERY BE CAREFUL, who will be performing a blistering set of LIVE cumbia and vallenato music. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band has developed a serious reputation for blowing away crowds with their music. We’ve been trying to get them to Tormenta Tropical for years, and are so excited that it’s finally going to happen. These boys are the real deal and will be playing some raw, old-school Colombian sounds.

Of course, Tormenta Tropical residents and Bersa Discos bossmen ORO11 and SHAWN REYNALDO will also be on hand with their usual assortment of cumbia jams and tropical heaters. Get there early and watch them warm up the party. It’s going to be a night to remember.

After the glorious return of Tormenta Tropical LA last month, we decided to keep the good times rolling and put together another ace party at Los Globos for the cumbia-loving residents of Los Angeles. It’s going down on Friday the 13th, but there is absolutely nothing unlucky about this lineup.

Who better to headline the festivities than SINDEN, one of LA’s newest residents? The man may have made a name for himself in London, but he recently relocated to the City of Angels and Tormenta Tropical is going to be his first show as an adopted Angeleno.

Also on the bill is one of LA’s resident heroes, BUTCHY FUEGO. A self-described “producer, drummer, DJ, renaissance man,” Butchy not only puts together wild DJ sets, but has also played with artists like the Boredoms, M.I.A., Nite Jewel, Rainbow Arabia, and others too numerous to list. He’s been a friend of the Bersa Discos crew for years now, but has somehow never played at Tormenta Tropical. We’re thrilled to have him finally make his Tormenta Tropical debut.

Of course, Tormenta Tropical residents and Bersa Discos bossmen ORO11 and SHAWN REYNALDO will also be on hand with their usual assortment of cumbia jams and tropical heaters. This is one Friday the 13th that you’ll want to be a part of.

It’s hard to believe, but Tormenta Tropical has been happening EVERY MONTH for the past FOUR YEARS in San Francisco. Seriously, we owe a giant thank you to all the loyal party people who have been coming through each month and getting down to our special brand of cumbia, dancehall, and tropical heat.

To celebrate our big birthday, we wanted to do something special, so we’ve brought back our old pal DJ RUPTURE. The celebrated scholar, globe-trotting sound explorer, badman DJ, and Dutty Artz bossman was one of the very first “big guests” we ever featured at Tormenta Tropical, so we’re thrilled to have him back behind the decks.

As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve also invited MALUCA, the fabulous NYC Dominican princess who always brings a fierce stage presence. It’s been more than two years since Maluca has performed in San Francisco, so we’re very excited to welcome her back to Tormenta Tropical.

Also look out for extended sets from Tormenta Tropical residents Shawn Reynaldo and Oro11, who will be digging deep in their hard drives to drop all the hottest jams from the past four years.

It’s our birthday! Come celebrate.

It’s been a minute since the last proper Tormenta Tropical party in Los Angeles, so we figured what better time to return to the City of Angels than our 4-year anniversary?

Headlining the party is none other than DJ Rupture, the globe-trotting sound explorer, badman DJ, and Dutty Artz bossman who shares our love of tropical rhythms past, present, and future.

Also joining the party is another New Yorker, Dominican princess Maluca, who always brings a fierce and fabulous presence to the stage. Maluca made her LA debut at Tormenta Tropical more than two years ago, so we’re thrilled to have her back.

Filling out the evening are some of our favorite LA spinners, including Fade to Mind crew member and Mustache Mondays resident Total Freedom, and the vinyl-digging boys of Mas Exitos.

Of course, Tormenta Tropical residents Shawn Reynaldo and Oro11 will also be in the house, bringing all the cumbia and tropical heaters you can handle.

It’s our birthday! It’s our return to Los Angeles! Be there.

Last month, Tormenta Tropical teamed up with our favorite NYC party, Que Bajo?! That collaboration was so fun that we decided to do it again, only with some of our homies from the wilds of Los Angeles, better known as the BODEGA crew.

If you haven’t been to one of their Sunday-evening summer throwdowns, Bodega residents PANAMAMI, CEE BROWN, and MELAAZA always cook up an excellent brew of Latin-flavored jams. The Bodega dancefloor is always popping, which is why we’re inviting them to bring a bit of that magic up north to Tormenta Tropical.

Let’s show Bodega how we do things in San Francisco. Of course, Tormenta Tropical residents and Bersa Discos head honchos Shawn Reynaldo and Oro11 will also be behind the decks and making sure the proper dosage of cumbia and tropical heat is administered.

Tormenta Tropical vs. Que Bajo?! with Uproot Andy, Geko Jones

Although Tormenta Tropical is one of only a handful of parties in the US devoted to tropical bass and the new breeds of cumbia and other Latin music that have popped up in recent years, we are by no means the only party flexing these sounds. One of the best is New York City’s Que Bajo?!, headed up by Uproot Andy and Geko Jones.

Both Andy and Geko are badman DJs and have played Tormenta before, but never had we had both under the same roof, squaring off against Tormenta residents and Bersa Discos bossmen Shawn Reynaldo and Oro11.

Expect a flurry of Latin and tropical jams of all shapes, sizes, and styles, as these four DJs collectively command a serious arsenal of next-level tunes and will no doubt be trying to one-up each other throughout the night.

Who will win? Why, the Tormenta Tropical dancefloor of course.

Tormenta Tropical with Paul Devro, Genie

DEVEREUX BROTHERS CALI INVASION!!!

Other the years, Tormenta Tropical has hosted a lot of guests from all over the world. However, we’ve never had a pair of brothers behind the decks, particularly brothers like Paul and Erik Devereux, the pride of Port Alberni, better known as Paul Devro and Genie.

At this point, Paul Devro is a member of the extended Tormenta Tropical family. A key member of Mad Decent’s inner circle, the genre-hopping DJ was one of our first-ever guests, back when he still lived in Canada and was best known as the guy who ran the Mad Decent blog. Even as he’s moved to LA and blown up along with the rest of the Mad Decent empire, he’s always found time to come back to Tormenta Tropical and serve up a slew of hot tunes that most people have never heard and will likely never hear again. We can’t wait for another go-round.

Erik Devereux might not have the same level of recognition on the US side of the border, but he just might be an even fiercer DJ. As Genie, he nimbly jumps between dancehall, bhangra, trap music, Arabic, and UK Funky sounds – and that’s just the beginning. Back home in Vancouver, his underground parties are the stuff of legend, and we’re confident that he’ll be bringing a little bit of that magic to the Tormenta Tropical dancefloor.

Of course, Bersa Discos bossmen and Tormenta Tropical residents Shawn Reynaldo and Oro11 will be on hand with the usual assortment of cumbia heaters, Latin jams, and tropical tuneage.

Also, we’ve added “OCEAN” as a genre on the flyer. What does it mean? Come through to find out.

Tormenta Tropical with Zuzuka Poderosa, Jillionaire

Event date: August 13th, 2011

Event Location: Elbo Room, San Francisco

Brooklyn-based baile funk queen ZUZUKA PODEROSA has been part of the extended Tormenta Tropical family for awhile now. Late last year, we squeezed her onto the bill with Spoek Mathambo, and Zuzuka absolutely stole the show with her fiery Brazilian raps and infectious carioca funk beats. We’ve been dying to get her back on the Tormenta stage ever since, so we’re hyped for her to headline our next party. She’ll be backed by LA-based DJ Righteous Trash.

Our second guest is none other than JILLIONAIRE, the globe-trotting DJ from Trinidad who always brings a wild assortment of tropical sounds. Oddly enough, the man has played Tormenta parties in NY and LA, but has never graced the decks at the flagship SF edition – until now.

Of course, Tormenta Tropical residents Oro11 and Shawn Reynaldo will be in the house, dropping cumbia, dancehall, and other tropical jams of all shapes and sizes.

Tormenta Tropical with Los Rakas, Samo Sound Boy

Event date: July 9th, 2011

Event Location: Elbo Room, San Francisco

NO PUEDE SER MÁS MASSIVE!!!!!!!

It was three years ago that Panama-via-Oakland duo LOS RAKAS first performed at Tormenta Tropical, and we’re still loving their music. Combining dancehall with hip-hop and some serious Latin flavor, the boys have blown up way beyond their local roots, so we’re excited to get them back in the sweaty confines of Tormenta Tropical.

SAMO SOUND BOY is an artist we’ve actually known for years, a DJ who first linked up with ORO11 back in Buenos Aires. Since then, the man has moved to LA, dropped a series of club bangers and dancefloor bombs, and been enlisted as the newest member of the Trouble & Bass crew. We’ve already had him play with us at Tormenta Tropical LA, but we’re FINALLY getting him up here to make his proper Tormenta debut in San Francisco.

As always, Bersa Discos bossmen and Tormenta Tropical residents SHAWN REYNALDO and ORO11 will be in the mix, bringing the cumbia and tropical jams and doing what they do.

Don’t miss this Tormenta Tropical. It’s going to be a big one.

Tormenta Tropical with Kingdom, Nguzunguzu, Total Freedom

Event date: June 11th, 2011

Event Location: Elbo Room, San Francisco

FADE TO MIND SHOWCASE!

Tormenta Tropical has hosted artists from a lot of different crews over the years, but this month we’re especially excited to link up with the Fade to Mind boys from Los Angeles. KINGDOM, NGUZUNGUZU, and TOTAL FREEDOM have all graced the decks at Tormenta before, but now we’ve got all three together, doing a special b2b session.

Expect a night full of warped R&B, twisted global bass, UK futurism, old-school house, and whatever other dancefloor-friendly weirdness these guys decide to throw into the mix.

And of course, residents SHAWN REYNALDO and ORO11 will be there with the usual Tormenta assortment of cumbia and tropical heat.
